Men's Osteoporosis Support Group

Medline Plus

Medline Plus is an excellent free resource for osteoporosis issues, or medical information of all kinds. It is a service of the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health. If you've never used it, I just wanted to suggest you try the next time you have a question about a medical condition, vitamins, minerals, etc.

I'm working on the issue of vitamin D and bone health and spent some time on Medline Plus recently researching that topic. I want to walk you through what I did so you'll see the wealth of information I was able to find. The easiest thing would probably have been to just use the search feature for "vitamin D" from the home page. Instead I went to Health Topics, clicked on the V in the alphabetical list at the top of the page, and then Vitamins. I think I could have spent the day researching everything available on that page, but I went to Specific Conditions and then Vitamin D at the NIH (National Institutes of Health). There was an excellent, comprehensive discussion of vitamin D there, including great information about its importance regarding osteoporosis. Here are all the major topics discussed:

Introduction
Reference Intakes
Sources of Vitamin D
Vitamin D Intakes and
Status
Vitamin D Deficiency
Groups at Risk of
Vitamin D Inadequacy
Vitamin D and Health
Health Risks from
Excessive Vitamin D
Interactions with
Medications
Vitamin D and Healthful
Diets
References

Summary. I think you'll find that Medline Plus is a great resource for researching medically related issues. Spend some time there to get an idea of all that it offers and then I suggest you bookmark the home page and refer to it often.
