Men's Osteoporosis Support GroupParathyroid hormone PTH(1-34) transdermal patch Pharm Res. 2009 Sep 3. [Epub ahead of print]. Demonstrated Solid-State Stability of Parathyroid Hormone PTH(1-34) Coated on a Novel Transdermal Microprojection Delivery System. Ameri M, Daddona PE, Maa YF. PMID: 19730995. Parathyroid hormone (1-34) is currently approved for treatment of severe osteoporosis by the FDA as Forteo (teriparatide) and is given in a daily injection. This article describes a new transdermal formulation of parathyroid (1,34) that is stabile for at least two years and that has been proven effective in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis in a Phase 2 clinical trial. Editor's comments. Having a transdermal formulation of parathyroid (1,34) that can be delivered by a patch to treat severe osteoporosis would be beneficial in several ways. I'm guessing it won't be significantly cheaper than the injection method, but it will be much more convenient to apply a once-daily patch than to inject yourself daily. Also, the injection system requires special refrigerated delivery and careful refrigerated handling once it is received until it is used. The transdermal patch formulation, being stabile for at least two years, will not require that special handling. The manufacturer's website has more details on this new technology. It will probably be a couple of years for final approval, assuming all goes well with additional clinical trials and presentation of data to the FDA. So don't look to take advantage of this new technology immediately, but possibly some time in the future.
